OUR SPRING GARDEN ACCESSORIES

We’re starting the countdown to warmer weather and overflowing garden beds by sharing our spring garden accessories that we’re loving right now. We’re also opening our eyes to the seasonal changes around us and finding ways to celebrate those joyful moments. For me the garden is another room to decorate so I like the accessories to be stylish and functional.

If you’re anything like us, spring is when you start making big plans for the garden. The kitchen garden may be a little sparse with only overwinter crops like leeks and broccoli left to eat. However, the garden at This Home Grows is already starting to sing. The stunning colours, scents and scenery prepares to bloom. Gorgeous purple and white crocuses have already made their annual appearance, wild garlic season has arrived and the days are finally longer. I’ve really started to notice the birds singing in the morning too. Even our resident Robin is being bolder than usual, following us around hoping we’ll unearth something edible.

Inside the greenhouse there are trays of sunbathing seedlings showing their green shoots of promise. Spring is our moment to get organised and there’s real pleasure in doing it. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned gardener we all need the right tools. So, without further ado, it’s time to share some of our favourite spring garden accessories for sowing and growing this spring. Plus, a couple of fun growing kits we’ve been given by friends and family to try out. Perfect for getting the little ones involved. Start them young!

The Joy of Growing

It still amazes me what a handful of soil and a sprinkle of seeds can create. For March, we’re working with a mixture of seeds we grew last year like radishes and spinach. I’m also excited that potatoes and butter will be back on the menu soon. The early potatoes are chitting on the windowsill so they will be planted out next month. We’d recommend seed/seedling swapping as we do with family and friends. After all, gardening is about being resourceful. It’s kind of how we like to live generally, reusing furniture where we can, upcycling items and growing our own food. In the garden we try to choose plants that come back year after year and plants that spread and re-seed.

Maintaining a garden and growing your own is definitely a labour of love, but since we’ve started we’ve learnt so much about what works for us. You don’t have to be an expert to just get started. Our favourite spring garden accessories really make this process even more enjoyable. I’ve also linked some pieces I’ve had my eye on and hope to add this year.

Spring Garden Accessories

Garden basket

Sophie Conran grey harvesting basket.

Oh, I do love a basket and particularly one that carries homegrown goodies. I’m sure many of you share the love for the trusty garden trug. My wicker one is super practical and beautiful. Yet, there’s no harm in a little variety ;). Recently, I was given this beautiful grey harvesting basket and it’s quickly becoming one of my favourite spring garden accessories. The only instruction by my friend was to fill it up for an edible doorstep drop. So I hope we can deliver ;). In the meantime, I’ve already fallen in love with it, using it to carry my tools, gloves, seeds and plants around while I happily potter. I can’t wait to fill it with vegetables, flowers and herbs from the garden in abundance.

Tools

There are so many we could recommend for the growing season. Let’s not forget that we can also be resourceful and sustainable in the garden by using second hand garden tools. Most of ours we have collected this way, but one day I plan to invest and this Sophie Conran essentials set would be the dream.

Pots

Spring garden accessories means a lot of potting up, so plenty of pots are needed. Did I mention how I unearthed terracotta pots from our garden? 😉 ha. Well, I know that was a huge stroke of luck and I love embracing their rustic beauty inside and out. You can find similar at reclamation yards and most garden stores like these. Reuse and keep them outside long enough and they’ll wear beautifully with age.

Garden scissors

I’m sure you all own and use secateurs in the garden but I’ve always wanted a pair of beautiful garden scissors. The tool of choice for anyone wanting to prune, take cuttings and general trimming of smaller foliage. I absolutely love my new set. Plus, they look so pretty and I keep ours hung up in the utility ready to grab for a forage, which is often!

Watering can

I landed an absolute bargain with this watering can. There are so many out there to choose from and to be honest I don’t think you can go too wrong. However, if you’re looking for a watering can that is reasonably priced and pleasing on the eye then this one from Homebase gets my vote. It’s sitting so happily in my greenhouse.

My Spring Garden Style

Clothing & Footwear

You don’t have to sacrifice fashion to be comfortable and functional for gardening. Yes, the British weather can be pretty unpredictable during spring (any time come to that!?), so it’s good to know I can always rely on my favourite jacket and wellies. To be honest, I can’t think of a day where I haven’t worn my Barbour. Come rain or shine it’s my outdoor staple. I’m known to even wear it in the office. The wax jacket is a true icon of the British countryside that can be layered up or worn solo. It’s simply timeless and gets better with age. The hubby loves his too.

Also, my Le chameau wellies are my pride and joy and see me through all the seasons. They add a touch of style for everyday use and are comfortable and lightweight; perfect for dog walks and in the garden. I’d recommend both as they are classics that will never date!

Our Spring Accessories Wish List

Water butt

We have promised to treat ourselves to a water butt. I know haha! Ever since we upcycled the playhouse for Esme we had the idea to attach guttering and add a water butt to use for the nearby kitchen garden. I am still looking at what style I would like but really like this one on Etsy.

Garden Cloche

We’re looking at garden cloches to protect our seedlings, plants and vegetables from resident birds and wildlife. We’re lucky we have a lot of visitors but they tend to like a big snack on our vegetables. I really love these Dunelm ones as they look elegant and timeless. You could even use them to reveal your dinner with a flourish 😉 only joking!

Seed organiser

This seed organiser is definitely on the wish list. I fell in love with this organiser because it’s designed to be worn in with love and time. It handily has a tabbed index and pockets inside too. I’m still toying with this folder or a traditional tin. Or maybe even an upcycled version!?

Spring Garden Accessories For Little Ones

For Esme’s first birthday we got her a brilliant mini garden tool kit. She loves using it and generally making a mess with the soil. So, this year we want to grow her love for playing and experimenting outside. Our family and friends know how much we enjoy spending time in the garden as a family and so we’ve been given a few things to try out this growing season! We’ve also got our sunflower seeds ready to sow. They’re taking on a whole new meaning this year.

Strawberries bucket

Homegrown strawberries are a real highlight for the summer months and the little ones love it. This grow your own strawberry kit comes with everything you need and has easy to follow instructions. I can’t wait for Esme to taste her own homegrown strawberries.

Caterpillar cress

This cress kit shaped like a caterpillar will get your child’s attention and is perfect for early gardeners. Super easy to use with parent supervision. It’s the perfect kit to teach children how to sow seeds, look after them and watch them grow.

I hope our spring garden accessories assemble provides inspiration for the growing season ahead. It certainly brings us a lot of joy. Small moments of happiness in the garden are not overrated.

Let us know what you’re planning to grow this year in the comments? I’d love for us all to grow along with each other and exchange tips 🙂

Take care and happy home growing.
